You can create homemade “Flubber” by using Metamucil (Amazon link: Metamucil). Place a teaspoon of the product into a bowl with 1 cup warm water. Stir until the powder dissolves. Place the bowl into the microwave. Run at full power for 4-5 minutes, until the goo starts to “rise”. When the bubbles are just about to overflow the bowl, turn off the microwave. Let it cool slightly and repeat this process. The more times you repeat this process, the more “rubbery” the Flubber gets.
After 5 or 6 runs, pour the goo onto a plate or cookie pan. With a spoon, stir the goo while it’s cooling. BE CAREFUL!!! The concoction is BURNING HOT!
Once it’s cooled, you have a “non-stick” Flubber. Try bouncing and stretching your Flubber. No matter how much you play squeeze and step on it, it doesn’t lose its elasticity. Take a knife and cut it into different-size pieces. You can shape it into all kinds of neat things. Use your imagination and have fun!
NOTE: If your first batch is “sticky” to the touch, you’ve used too much water. If prepared properly, it should feel cold and clammy to the touch, but should not stick to your fingers or anything else. If it does, try another batch with less water.
Your Flubber will keep for months if you store it in a Ziploc bag. It will last even longer if you refrigerate it.
HOW IT WORKS: Metamucil is 95% psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid, (psyllium, for short), a substance that comes from certain varieties of plantain plant husks native to Iran and India. It is a bulk-forming fiber. Other fibers that belong to the class of bulk-forming fibers are cellulose, methylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, karaya, malt soup extract, polycarbophil, and wheat bran.
Psyllium is also an example of a water-soluble fiber, which means it is able to dissolve in water. The Flubber you made is called a colloidal suspension, which is a liquid dispersed in a solid. Heat from the microwave increased the rate of this dispersion. After the psyllium particles mixed with water, they began to form a gel. This ability to absorb water was mainly due to the presence of mucilage (a type of fiber) in the psyllium husks, which were 10-30% mucilage. This is why Metamucil acts as a good dietary supplement; it helps remove waste from the body. In fact, if you only ate Metamucil for a long period of time, your poo would be almost exactly like the Flubber you made!
